Amrita Sher-Gil
Born in Budapest, Sher-Gil studied painting in Paris before returning to India in 1934. Her work brought European training into conversation with Indian subjects and visual traditions. Her portraits and scenes of village life are known for earthy colour, simplified forms and the emotional weight of ordinary moments.
What to look for
Notice the stillness, restrained expressions and the relationship between a figure and its surroundings.
The portraits of Sher-Gil and Husain are AI-illustrated tributes, not original artworks or archival photographs.
