Reading a provenance sheet
Provenance is the history of ownership. A useful record names prior owners, dates of transfer, galleries, auctions and relevant publications. Match those details to photographs and dimensions. A continuous history helps, but it is not automatically proof of authenticity. Unclear entries should be checked with the seller or an independent expert.
